AP Process Harmonization and Automation

From a fragmented system landscape to one unified, automated process

Migros is Switzerland’s largest private employer, with nearly 99,000 employees in around 90 companies. With annual revenues of CHF 32.5 billion, the group operates across multiple sectors — from retail, manufacturing, and gastronomy to financial and healthcare services. In 2020, Migros started its group-wide S/4HANA transformation program, "Project Eiger". The goal: to harmonize and automate the historically grown, decentralized IT landscapes and business processes, enabling greater efficiency, transparency, and scalability. With BLP, 12 separate processes have been consolidated into 1 harmonized standard.

Before the project started, each of the 12 Migros organizations ran its own ERP system and accounts payable solution, leading to high admin effort, inconsistent processes, and limited transparency at group level. Today, Migros runs a single, standardized, and automated accounts payable process across the group — cutting resource needs by 30 – 40% while gaining real-time, group-wide transparency and audit-ready traceability.

During the vendor selection process, BLP had to demonstrate its capabilities in real-world conditions, first with 10 and then with 300 invoices, directly onsite. BLP stood out clearly: 96% document recognition in three languages without prior training, straightforward real-time configuration of workflows and user interfaces onsite, deep and reliable SAP integration, and the option to use BLP across additional Migros entities and ERP processes in the future.

Integration completed in three days

The implementation of BLP was lean, pragmatic, and deliberately driven by the business department rather than IT. SAP integration was completed within three days, the first go-live followed after eight weeks, and 100 key users were fully trained and operational after just two hours. The rollout was executed in four waves, aligned with the overall S/4HANA transformation.

“Despite the scale and complexity of the project, BLP delivered within time, budget, and scope. The reliable, solution-oriented collaboration with BLP was a key factor in the overall success of the transformation program.”

Less resources needed

Less repetitive work, more focus on value

With BLP, Migros has made its accounts payable processes significantly more efficient, transparent, and standardized. Manual, repetitive tasks have been replaced by automated invoice processing and approval, freeing up capacity and cutting resource needs by 30–40%: a major relief amid skilled labor shortages. A unified system now enables real-time insights with group-wide analytics and reporting, as well as full audit traceability.

The introduction of BLP was one of several subprojects within the S/4HANA program, completed on time, on budget, and within scope. The solution continues to evolve, with customer feedback directly influencing the product roadmap. Thanks to its cloud architecture, all customers benefit immediately from new features.

“As another IT project, we had expected weeks of SAP integration and months of implementation time. BLP required only 3 days of IT resources for the SAP integration. We were positively surprised.”
